My reMarkable Tablet Was an Island. Here’s How I Fixed It

An island no more.

My reMarkable Paper Pro Move is almost always within arm’s reach. If you’d told me that a year ago, I would have said probably not. I was enamored with e-ink tablets from the very beginning. I remember sitting in a coffee shop and seeing the man at the next table using one, and I pined for one after that. Eventually I bought one off eBay to try it out, and it wasn’t for me. The problem was that it was an island. Anything I put in there lived just there. The appeal was that it wasn’t connected to all the distraction, but it was too disconnected. I needed to reliably capture things to my to-do list and projects, and to reference information from those projects without manually moving it over.

I figured out how to make it work, and in this video I share two real-world examples. Every morning my phone stays on the charger for the first couple of hours, and I sit on the couch with my coffee and the reMarkable. A “today” note is waiting with the weather, my appointments, and my tasks, so I get an overview of the day without diving into email and notifications. I read, and my highlights get sent back to my notes for that book. If I think of something, I flip to my inbox note and write “vacuum the car #today,” then flip back and keep reading, knowing it will land on my to-do list. Or I’ll go to a coffee shop, leave the laptop in the bag, and work through my prompts folder or a long-form writing project, knowing whatever I write will be converted back to text and saved in the right place.

Behind the scenes, an always-on Mac mini runs rmapi, along with a handful of Python scripts that push information to the reMarkable and pull my handwritten notes back down. Local AI models convert the handwriting to text and file it. I didn’t write any of the code myself. I just told Claude what I wanted, and I keep refining it. (This isn’t sponsored, and I think something similar could work with other e-ink devices.) What I’ve found is a sweet spot: connected, not an island, but not hyper-connected either. Do you have a workflow like this, or an idea I should steal for mine? I’d love to hear it.
